Sixth Form

In recognition of their growing maturity and independence, the dress code for the Sixth Form is 'business dress'. This is intended to strike a balance between individuality, establishing a professional working environment and the need to represent the school to the wider community. We hope that Sixth Formers will recognise the importance of taking pride in a smart appearance appropriate to a place of work and of setting an example to younger pupils.

Sixth Form dress should reflect a professional working environment and therefore pupils should look smart at all times.

The list below is not meant to be exhaustive. If in doubt, contact the Head of Sixth Form prior to any purchase to confirm the suitability of any items.

Business dress

  • A smart skirt, trouser or dress suit, with a blazer, in neutral colours: brown, blue, black or grey. Formal discreet patterns e.g. pinstripe, herringbone or check are permitted.
  • A smart business shirt / blouse (tucked in) or formal fitted top, with a high neckline, and long or short sleeves (vest tops, tops with a low neckline, crop tops or tops with no sleeves do not conform to policy).
  • Smart black or brown shoes.

Any business suit from the major department stores that fits the above criteria would normally be deemed appropriate.

Please see the specific guidance below:

  • Skirt, dress or trouser suits are acceptable.
  • Skirts may be worn just above the knee, but no shorter.
  • Plain opaque tights (black) may be worn with skirts or dress suits.
  • Dark socks should be worn with trouser suits.
  • Plain jumpers or fitted cardigans may be worn under the blazer in the winter.
  • Top coats for winter wear should be plain and of formal business style.
  • A Sixth Form, House or Colour tie is acceptable.
  • Jewellery should be discreet.
  • Make-up should be minimal and discreet.
  • Nails should not be of an excessive length, but can be varnished.
  • We follow the Halo Code. Long Hair must be securely tied back when health and safety dictates, hair colouring should be natural.

The following are specifically not permitted:

  • Nose rings: on hygiene and health and safety grounds.
  • Boots or sharp stilettos: on maintenance and health and safety grounds.
  • Tattoos: as the legal age to have a tattoo is 18 years.

  • Jackets and ties may be left off. If a tie is not worn, the top button - and only the top button - of the shirt must be undone.

Woolly hats may be worn in very cold weather where the same rules apply, i.e. they should be of a tasteful plain colour and un-emblazoned by logos. Neither hats nor scarves should be worn inside buildings.

During the working day the overall effect should be one that is in keeping with the standards of the School and with the wearing of school uniform.  Therefore should not reflect extremes of fashions; this includes hair no shorter than a grade 2.

The dyeing of hair is not acceptable. Any hair colouring which is deemed unnatural, or where highlights are evident may result in an appropriate sanction. For safety reasons when using machinery in the Design and Technology Department or carrying out a science practical, hair must not come down below the eyebrows. During games it is appropriate that long hair should be tied back.
